When You Can Upgrade You can upgrade to any new version of your licensed products that Microsoft releases during the two years your Software Assurance is in effect, but the actual upgrade does not have to take place within those two years. For example, if Microsoft releases a new version of Office in October, and your Software Assurance for the old version expires in January, you don't have to upgrade before January. You can upgrade at any time in the future, as long as Microsoft still makes the new version available.
You can't, however, upgrade to versions that Microsoft releases after your Software Assurance expires. Software Assurance upgrade benefits for licenses are automatic: you don't have to do anything to activate them. Getting the Installation Software Software upgrades can be obtained online or ordered by phone or fax. For more information, see Downloading and Installing Software. Office Multi-Language Packs are add-in products that can display the user interface of the Office desktop applications — windows, tabs, help, and so on — in more than 90 different languages.
These packs also allow you to check spelling and grammar and use other proofing tools on documents created in these languages. You'll need to have a license for an Office suite, not just an individual Office product.
Office Multi-Language Packs are listed among the licensed downloads as described in Downloading and Installing Software. Office Suites for Home Use Any employee who has a Microsoft Office suite on their work computer can get a copy of the current version of Office Professional or Office for Mac for home use through a low-cost download.
They can also request installation software for an additional fee to cover the costs. There are two purchase options: Employees can purchase the software individually, or Software Assurance administrators can place a bulk purchase order for quantities of 20 units or more.
Office software can be used only while the user continues to be an employee at the organization and Software Assurance for the Office suite remains active.
For more information, see Home Use Programme. Note : The product use rights for desktop application software allow the organisation to install a copy on a portable device for use by the single primary user of the licensed device.
This option makes it possible for an employee to continue working away from the office. You must use Internet Explorer 5. When activation is complete, a digit alphanumeric access code appears. You will also receive an email with the same access code and an email template you can send to your employees to inform them they are eligible for this benefit.
Microsoft E-Learning Courses E-learning courses are self-paced, interactive training on the use of Microsoft products developed by Microsoft experts. Courses are designed to gain maximum skills in minimal time. Assessments, hands-on virtual labs, expert advice, and an interactive, nonlinear approach make e-learning an engaging and flexible experience. You must have a Windows Live ID to enroll in a course. Students must start a course before Software Assurance expires and complete it within one year of when they started it.
How Many Courses Are Available? The number and type of courses available depends on the number and type of products with active Software Assurance. You have one disaster recovery license for each server license with active Software Assurance.
Seems to be that you will have to contact Microsoft, see if they will give you a discounted price to upgrade all those machines. Might not hurt to threaten them with migrating to Linux machines haha. That's not likely to be cost effective. I have nowhere near that many, so I don't know. My only concern is that we have purchased multiple new machines that came with Windows 7 installed but were up-gradable to Windows 10, via disc.
That's what I mean by 'works with'. It's very similar from the upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 on Dell machines years ago, basically some keys were able to be upgraded to Windows 7 and other older machines were not.
You have an option of licensing per user or per device with Windows 10 Enterprise, versus just per device with Windows 10 Pro.
I wrote a how-to in Spiceworks a few years ago on this: What are my options to license Windows 10? I don't believe their is an upgrade SKU from previous versions of Windows any longer. VL would be cheaper than purchasing retail licenses. That quantity would enable you to enter into an Enterprise Agreement with Microsoft and that certainly would give you the best pricing.
Which license did you pay for, though? If you paid for 10, but had them downgraded to 7, those machines are ready to move to 10 at no cost. If you actually purchased them with Windows 7 licenses, you'll need to purchase an upgrade for each of them. Just to be clear, the keys aren't relevant when it comes to licensing. All that matters is which license you purchased. Did they come with a license for Win10 or was it more of a y ou can upgrade this device but need a license to do so scenario?
Activation is not licensing. You cannot license Windows 10 by using a Windows 7 license. OP seems to want to have legit licenses, which means paying for them. Selfstudy is an IT service provider. What you are confusing is you bought machines with Windows 10 downgraded to Windows 7.
Those have Full Window 10 Pro keys, but you are using downgrade rights, Only way to be certain is to pull the invoice and see what it says. For 1K machines that is a large amount of work.
What you have to watch out for is machines that were purchased near Windows 10's official release Window. Some of these machine might of been bought with Windows 8.
Anything 3 months or older from that date will definitely be 8. I am looking at this project for my environment too. We are significantly smaller. Realistically, there are several ways to "just activate" windows 10, but that would mean you haven't paid for Win Not a good place to be in as a business. WE are just going to be buying Upgrade Volume Licensing for all of our machines. It's the most practical. Pay the money, make sure you're square with the big M, and your life will get much easier.
I think you were hoping for some type of free upgrade, sorry that ship has sailed. Even if some of your computers came with a Windows 10 license and you downgraded to 7, I think legally that was a one-time choice I could be wrong about that. Plus what a nightmare to sort out, unless big blocks of them were purchased at the same time. I would never upgrade a pc that originally came with Windows 7 Professional to Win10 in a corporate environment. Whatever it came with, stick with that until you retire it.
By all of your Win7 machines should be up for renewal anyway, so shouldn't the renewal process weed out any Win 7 machines in a timely and orderly manner?
Every time I have seen computers in a corporate environment changed from what originally came they never seem to run as well, and end up costing more time in the long run for no reward. I would test one or two with the new image as most likely they will just register fine if they are computers like Dell or HP where the key is on the motherboard, they will just register themselves.
If it was sold with a Windows 10 license then it's licensed for 10 even though it may have been downgraded. You are wrong. If they are licensed for 10 they can have 10 installed on them. Downgrading to 7 does not remove your original 10 license. You are licensed for 10, but using 7. If you format the drive you can install 7 again, or install Either is fine.
I would never upgrade a pc that originally came with Win 7 pro to Win10 in a corporate environment. Formatting and installing 10, however, would do as you say - if the license is in BIOS it will activate.
I'd seriously consider taking the plunge into the VL world. Upfront cost is high but KMS is so very sweet. What some people are saying is correct. You are well within your rights to do so. I have machines that were like this and we are moving those up to 10 now. Just have to remember that you can't automate the process by pushing out a SOE volume licence copy from a distribution server.
If your licence is for an OEM copy, you'll need to use the OEM Windows 10 copy to install, and install the key manually unless you are lucky and the licence key is embedded in the BIOS, in which case Windows 10 will pick it up from there.
All depends on the vendor. The other point of pain is Upgrade vs fresh install. I'd really recommend a fresh install. Get your user files, etc. JamesWeiler - this is a lot of responsibility and liability to take on for yourself. It could cost your job for you if you are not careful. I too, feel the need to try to cut costs for my work. However, licensing is more of a legal issue. Trying to upgrade without knowing your licensing status is a problem for you.
If you are not in management, then get your direction from management and let them take that liability in writing. You are not in a small company with a users. There have to be more people involved unless you are the lone IT manager.
This is an expected business expense and should be handled as such. Take the guess work out of it.
